Enter the US Intelligence Agencies
The Birth of Operation Aerodynamic
Somewhere between 1941 and 1943, OUN(M) and OUN(B), looking to change their image and distance themselves from each other, rebranded.
OUN(M) became the Ukrainian People's Revolutionary Army. OUN(B) became the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
The Ukrainian Insurgent Army went on to become anti-Nazi Germany. (Remember I said that the leaders were eventually arrested and put in a concentration camp.) During WW2, they carried out guerilla type tactics to destroy German food warehouses and attack the German economy. They even had a temporary "non-aggression" agreement with Russia, which fell apart cause nobody trusted Russia.
The Ukrainian People's Revolutionary Army ended up taking a safer, gentler route and "moved deep underground", which basically means they were disbanded in 1943.
In September 1945, American intelligence took notice and sent representatives from the US Counterintelligence Corps (CIC) to start approaching members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. This included Lebed (codename Swan), Grinyokh, and Prokop.
In March 1946, Churchill gave his Iron Curtain Speech in Fulton, Missouri which started off the Cold War.
The Communist parties, which were very small in all these Eastern States of Europe, have been raised to pre-eminence and power far beyond their numbers and are seeking everywhere to obtain totalitarian control. Police governments are prevailing in nearly every case, and so far, except in Czechoslovakia, there is no true democracy. Turkey and Persia are both profoundly alarmed and disturbed at the claims which are being made upon them and at the pressure being exerted by the Moscow Government. - Winston Churchill
Anti-Russia operations in Eastern Europe officially became a thing.
The Ukrainian Insurgent Army started collecting intelligence against Russia. Their focus included:
The course of the demobilization of the Soviet Army
Numbers and composition of Soviet armed forces
Location of military units
The political and moral state of the Soviet Army
Location and production of Soviet military factories
The deployment of strategic raw materials and locations of warehouses
Mykola Lebed published a 126-page pamphlet UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army). It "described the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian national liberation movement fighting against the Nazis and Communists. The UPA, in accordance with this booklet, had hopes for the forces of Nazi Germany, but after 1941 became disillusioned with its policies."
Counterintelligence Corps (CIC) ended up picking up a copy of Lebed's pamphlet.
In 1947, there were approximately 250,000 displaced Ukrainians. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army moved through the US occupation zones to unite displaced Ukrainians. Bandera, the head of the UPA, sought to establish control over Ukrainian emigrant circles.
Russia (the USSR) became aware of all this and tried having Bandera extradited under the guise as a war criminal who collaborated with Nazis. The US replied by saying that they "could not find the whereabouts of these individuals." The US, fearing for Ledeb's safety, ended up moving him from Rome to Munich as he was "an important source of information about resistance in Ukraine."
Also in 1947, a message was sent from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army to a man named Roman Shukhevych. The promised that the western countries would soon war against the USSR (Russia). Roman Shukhevych was a Ukrainian national and military commander who was responsible for killing 100,000 Polish citizens. He was also a military commander in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
By 1948, the CIA was in full preparation to start a war with Russia (the USSR). Covert operations had started under CODENAME CARTEL. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army was the CIA's partner of choice, which named the "Grignoch-Swan group ... as the most suitable for covert operations". (Gringoch meaning Ivan Mikhailovich Grinokh who was the iron cross chaplain I mentioned earlier. Swan meaning Mykola Lebed.) "The CIA provided financial, material support and training facilities, as well as training agents and their further airborne deployment to the USSR."
British MI6 stated working directly with Bandera, who wasn't on good terms with Swan.
OPERATION AERODYNAMIC was born.
